Ceiling Fan and Light Control Options

There are several ways to control ceiling fans and lights.

No switch - power goes directly to the fan fixture. Pull chains can be used to control the fan and lights. A remote and receiver can also be used.
1 switch - to turn power on/off to the fan lights. This can be replaced by a wall control switch.
2 switches - one switch turns power on/off to the fan, the other to the lights.
Wall control switch - to adjust fan speed and lights. Wall controls are available for either 2 or 3 wire NM configurations. A wall control switch may or may not use a receiver. Find ceiling fan wall control
Remote control switch - is paired with a receiver inside the fan canopy to control the fan and lights.

(No Switch)

Line, neutral, and ground from an NM cable are connected to the fan wires inside the fan canopy.

Lutron Wall Control Switch

This Lutron device controls fan and lights including fan speed and light dimmer. This is done without using a receiver. Find Lutron ceiling fan wall control.

Ceiling Fan 1 Switch Wiring Diagram

Line voltage enters the switch outlet box and is connected a switch.

Line switched, neutral, and ground from the NM cable are connected to the fan wires inside the fan cover.

Line voltage enters the switch outlet box and is connected to each switch

The fan switch usually connects to the black wire and the light switch to the red wire of a 3-wire NM.

The black wire of the ceiling fan is for the fan, and the blue wire is for the light kit.
