Convert 3-Way Switch to Single Pole
Question or Comment?
How to Convert 3-Way Switches to Single Pole
To convert a 3-way switch to a single pole, one of the traveler wires is removed from the switch. In order for a 3-way switch to function as a single pole, the wires need to be connected to the common and one of the traveler terminals. It will not work if the wires are connected to the two traveler terminals. The other traveler terminal is left unconnected.
3-way switches can be converted to single pole in several configurations.
1. Single pole switch on line side (left side of diagram), blank cover on load side (to light).
2. Blank cover on line side, single pole switch on load side
3. Single pole switch on line side, outlet on load side.
4. Outlet on line side, single pole switch on load side.
Single Pole Switch on Line Side
In the line side box, remove the 3-way switch. Using a wire connector, connect the line wire to one of the traveler wires to supply line voltage to the load side box. Install a wire connector on each end of the other traveler to make it a spare. Install a blank cover on the box.
In the load side box, remove the traveler spare wire from the switch and attach a wire connector to it.
