Finished and unfinished basements
Refrigerator (dedicated circuit)
Laundry, utility, and wet bar within six feet of a sink
Pool, spa water fountain, equipment (pumps, pool and spa lights)
Boathouses

GFCI, AFCI Dual Function Locations

In these locations, dual function GFCI and AFCI can be used. A dual function outlet has both GFCI and AFCI protection.

Kitchen
Refrigerator (dedicated circuit)
Finished basements

AFCI Location Requirements

Since the revision of the NEC in 2017, every 15 and 20-amp, 120-volt, single-phase branch circuit outlets for dwelling areas are required to have AFCI installed on them including:

Bedrooms
Kitchen
Hallways and closets
Laundry rooms
Refrigerator (dedicated circuit)
Common rooms (such as dens, living rooms & dining rooms)
Finished basements
